Light a candle. Grab a cup of tea. And throw a blanket on your knees.

✍️ Welcome to the Skillful Scribbler!

Hey there,

I’m Jen Baxter. I’m a copywriter and content strategist living in Austin, Texas. I moved to Texas from San Francisco for a job during the great migration — and as we all know, you’re never just moving for a job (or a guy) because life has other plans.

I worked for a hybrid book publishing company (Scribe Media) where I helped authors write their websites, LinkedIn content, and emails. You can hear how that story ended by reading and you thought the Twitter takeover was bad?

That’s how I got the Substack bug. It all started very harmlessly. I was trying to figure out what was going on here to help the authors I worked with build their platforms. I started sharing posts about my writing practice on the company Slack channels.

For years, I held women’s writing groups called Soul Writing Sessions. It’s a freewriting practice that’s part meditative and part creative. It's a safe space for women to hear their voices on the page, often for the first time.

Now, I call them Scribbling Circles.

And if you need support getting started on Substack, I offer Set Up and Grow Your Substack coaching to help you hit publish on a regular newsletter. I’ve coached writers, entrepreneurs, and new authors in developing their unique voices on Substack.

We all need help and support in reaching our writing goals. As a professional copywriter, I’ve honed my skills in giving feedback to strengthen the writing. (And make the process more fun!).

I’m all about taking life’s raw material and writing something that makes you laugh, get all faklempt, and occasionally snort.

Every Monday you’ll get one of those posts in your inbox.

If we met at a party, here are a few tidbits I might share:

(With a quick 1-minute video introducing myself - goofy face and all:-)

🍸 In 2010, I resigned from an 8-year career at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, bought a one-way ticket to Bali, Indonesia, and stayed for three years.

🍸 I did my undergraduate degree in English Lit at Manchester College, Oxford, and interned at a human rights magazine called Index on Censorship in London after graduation.

🍸 As much as I love Bali, I still miss England; there’s something about riding the beleaguered British Rail System through the countryside that my soul sometimes longs for.

🍸 I’m an amateur photographer who loves photo adventures with friends, so you’ll see lots of my pictures around here.

Now, why don’t you start here and tell me about you?
