Light a candle. Grab a cup of tea. And throw a blanket on your knees.
āļø Welcome to the Skillful Scribbler!
Hey there,
Iām Jen Baxter. Iām a copywriter and content strategist living in Austin, Texas. I moved to Texas from San Francisco for a job during the great migration ā and as we all know, youāre never just moving for a job (or a guy) because life has other plans.
I work with best-selling authors to create a sustainable content strategy that turns book marketing from an "ick" task into a genuine connection with their readers.
My favorite part, by far, is helping them understand the power of building and nurturing an email list.
I worked for a hybrid book publishing company (Scribe Media), where I helped authors write their websites, LinkedIn content, and emails. You can hear how that story ended by reading and you thought the Twitter takeover was bad?
Thatās how I got the Substack bug. It all started very harmlessly. I was trying to figure out what was going on here to help the authors I worked with build their platforms, and I started sharing my posts on the company's Slack channels.
Fast-forward (with many frustrating months of staring at the screen in between), Iāve now coached best-selling authors, entrepreneurs, and emerging authors in developing their unique voices on Substack. So, if you need support getting started on Substack, I offer Set Up and Grow Your Substack coaching to help you hit publish on a regular newsletter.
We all need help and support in reaching our writing goals. As a professional copywriter, Iāve honed my skills in giving feedback to strengthen your writing. (And make the process more fun!).
Iām all about taking lifeās raw material and writing something that makes you laugh, get all faklempt, and occasionally snort.
We'll explore how to weave your stories into weekly emails that build more than just a list - they'll create a tribe of engaged readers. (Because lifeās too short to feel like marketing your book is ickyāyou worked SO hard on it!)

And because everybody loves an excellent recommendationā¦ here are a few kind words from authors Iāve worked withā¦
"Jenās expertise extends beyond just copywriting. She knows how to effectively communicate an author's professional magic. She uses the power of personality to infuse it into website content, emails, and landing pages. She understood how to connect with my audience in a genuine and compelling way.ā
-Anthony Arismendi, Former FBI Special Agent and Bestselling Author
āIf youāre starting a Substack, hire Jen! After a 90-minute session where she walked me through the ins and outs of starting it, I was able to dive in, and she saved me so much time. She showed me how to make it look great, gave great advice, and helped me with goals and a launch strategy. Her support was invaluable!ā
- Liz Prueitt, Co-founder of Tartine Bakery, Author, and James Beard Award winner
