So Scribbler,
How about if you shake off any guilt around the writing that didn’t get done in January (which seemed to fly right by) and experiment with some inspiration for February?
I’ll be holding another Scribbling Circle on February 17th! And this feels like a good time to encourage you to start taking 5-10 minutes a week to freewrite to a prompt. Just so you’re not left to your own devices…
And end up in crisis… I’ll be adding prompt playlists to our Sunday mix.
Here’s how we’ll roll:
✒️ One Sunday a long(ish) post
✒️ Another Sunday a short prompt post (and perhaps a Spotify playlist)
✒️ Writing circles 1-2x a month
✒️ With some guest posts in the mix
We’ll see how you like all this. If you tell me in the comments you’re having fun, I’ll iterate from there. If not, I’ll dream up something else.
A few weeks ago I wrote a Substack anniversary post and talked about a few things I’ve learned over the past two years. Check out So what of this Substack experiment if you missed it. (So. many. emails. 📧)
It has the most comments on a post to date and that got me thinking…if you’re writing on Substack, this is a topic people love talking about. And if you’re not, there are plenty of other things you can apply this to. (Sometimes we forget to go back to the basics.)
The whole point of freewriting is about free association and stream of consciousness.
Soooo this week's prompt is:
What I’ve learned about…(and pick anything that comes to mind.)
…Substack
…sex
…Taylor Swift (’cause the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate)
…making friends
…keeping my mouth shut
Just let your pen wander and don’t stop writing until the timer goes off.
Here’s what we do in Scribbling Circles: if the prompt isn’t working for you, switch gears and write, “What I really want to write about is…” and go from there. It’s our basic default you can always circle back to.
And who knows – this might give you the kernel for your next newsletter or social media post. How about a funny postcard to a friend? (People love snail mail.)
Write like nobody’s reading…‘cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play. 🤣
And mark your calendar for the next Scribbling Circle:
Saturday, February 17th
4:30pm -6:30pm CT

The last one was awesome. Nothing like writing in community and connecting with new people.
So how about getting started with that prompt in the comments below: tell us one thing you’ve learned on Substack since you’ve been here. I know you’re making the moves up as you go.
🙏🏻 Take two secs to type a few words below!
Stay creative,
Jen

I was at the January scribblers circle ⭕️
What fun I had! Jen provided space, time and writing prompts to allow words, emotions, thoughts and feelings to fall onto my page and for the others who attended. A lovely way to ‘dump’ with no real agenda. I felt enlivened and ready for more. Thanks Jen for your guidance and support 😀
